Nations league round up: Spain-Portugal Draw again, Haaland scores, Greece wins

Spain 1-1 Portugal

Spain and Portugal played out a 1-1 draw and this remarkably makes it a fifth consecutive draw between both sides.

Ricardo Horta struck on his first Portugal appearance in almost eight years as they drew with Spain in their Nations League opener in Seville.

Spain’s Alvaro Morata scored the opening goal, finishing off a slick move involving Gavi and Pablo Sarabia.

Braga’s Horta, who won a first cap as a teenager in 2014, came off the bench and tucked home Joao Cancelo’s cross.

It is almost 10 years since this fixture was won by either side, with the last five meetings all draws.

Jordi Alba should have won the game for Spain when he headed wide from eight yards out.

Spain’s Carlos Soler and Portugal forward Rafael Leao squandered two good opportunities each with the hosts ahead 1-0 through Morata’s 25th-minute effort.

The visitors, who won the 2019 tournament, brought on Cristiano Ronaldo in the second half but he was not involved in the 82nd-minute equaliser, which was Horta’s first international goal.

This is only the second time in nine games in all competitions that Spain have not won. The other was last year’s Nations League final defeat by France.

In the other game in Group A2, the Czech Republic beat Switzerland 2-1.

On Sunday, the Czechs host Spain and Portugal are at home to Switzerland.

Serbia 1-2 Norway

Manchester City-bound striker Erling Haaland scored the winner for Norway as they began their Nations League campaign with victory in Serbia.

Haaland scored from close range after clever approach play involving Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard.

Haaland has scored in his past six internationals, hitting nine goals in that period. In total, he has struck 16 times in 18 appearances for his country.

Sweden beat Slovenia 2-0 in the other game in Group B4.

Northern Ireland 0-1 Greece

Northern Ireland’s search for a first Nations League win has now stretched to 11 matches after a deflating home defeat by Greece.

Visiting captain Tasos Bakasetas scored the only goal of a somewhat scrappy game at Windsor Park late in the first half.

Substitute Kyle Lafferty fired just over the crossbar with a well-hit free-kick late on as the hosts came to life in the final 25 minutes after a flat first-half performance.

Ian Baraclough’s men are now away to Cyprus on Sunday in their second League C Group 2 match before their busy schedule takes them to Kosovo on 9 June, then they complete their opening quadruple-header at home to Cyprus on 12 June.
