Lukaku now looks set to return to Inter Milan in this transfer window and the deal will be done very soon with some sources reporting that there is a €5m gap between the €10m Chelsea want and the €5m Inter want to pay in a loan fee.

Chelsea spent a club-record £97.5 million to sign Lukaku from Inter Milan last summer and He has struggled since making the switch, scoring just eight goals in 28 league appearances last season.

The Belgium international has been linked with a move away from Chelsea in recent weeks.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported one potential target that Chelsea could look at to replace Romelu Lukaku this summer.

Many names have been linked as potential replacements for Lukaku, and Romano has been speaking about one in particular in his column on Caught Offside this morning.

He says that Chelsea have followed RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku for a long time now and he is certainly an option. However, his club are determined to keep him and his large price could be a stumbling block.

“So far Leipzig have not received any offers from Arsenal for Christopher Nkunku, but I can reveal that Chelsea have been following him for some time,” Romano said. “Still, the price is over €100m because Leipzig want to try to keep him at all costs, and could even offer him a new contract this summer. Of course, Chelsea have problems up front with Romelu Lukaku, so it’s not surprising Nkunku could be seen as a replacement, but for now there’s not much to report.”

Nkunku is a versatile forward who can play anywhere across the front but a like for like replacement (striker) for Lukaku at Chelsea will be either Tottenham’s Harry Kane, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus.

Of all the targets mentioned, it is hard to see Harry Kane leave Spurs when they are seeming to progress under Antonio Conte and with Champions league football also guaranteed. It will take something serious to tempt spurs into selling.

Victor Osihmen looks like a viable option but he won’t come on the cheap and will command a huge fee likely to be in the region of €90m.

The more desirable and budget friendly choice is man city striker Gabriel Jesus who is keen on leaving city this summer following city’s acquisition of Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez. This leave him far down the pecking order at the Etihad.

It’s certainly an interesting one to keep an eye on and If Chelsea put enough pressure on it then they might be able to convince clubs to sell their targets to them at a reasonable fee.
