OFFICIAL: PSG sack Pochettino, replace him with Galtier

Paris-Saint Germain have announced the sacking of manager Mauricio Pochettino and the hiring of his replacement Christophe Galtier amid a leadership restructure.

Mauricio Pochettino leaves after 18 months in charge of the French champions despite the fact that it has been expected for almost a month now but now it has been officially confirmed.

A club statement announcing his exit reads: “Paris Saint-Germain confirm that Mauricio Pochettino has ended his role at the club.

“The club would like to thank Mauricio Pochettino and his staff for their work and wish them the best for the future.”

Luis Campos has already replaced Leonardo as sporting director, and now Pochettino’s exit is further show that PSG’s ownership would not put up with another Champions League failure.

Pochettino oversaw an unbeaten home record in the league this season, ending the campaign with 16 wins in 19 games.

PSG regained the title but their last-16 Champions League exit with Lionel Messi in the team was seen as a major failure.

Pochettino and his coaching staff have been paid a €15 million compensation fee after being relieved of their duties, with Miguel d’Agostino, Jesus Perez, Sebastian Pochettino and Toni Jimenez following the Argentine out the exit door.

Galtier announced as Pochettino’s replacement

Following pochettino’s sacking as PSG manager, Christophe Galtier has been announced as his replacement.

The club statement reads: “Paris Saint-Germain is delighted to announce that Christophe Galtier has been appointed as first team head coach. The Frenchman has signed a contract for two seasons until 30th June 2024.”

Speaking on his appointment, Galtier said: “I am delighted to join Paris Saint-Germain, I would like to thank the chairman Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, Luis Campos and the club for their confidence in me. I am fully aware of the responsibilities involved to coach this extraordinary team, which is one of the most competitive and spectacular squads in Europe.

“I am delighted to work with all of these talented players as well as the top-level staff here at the club. We acknowledge everything that Paris Saint-Germain represents in French and international football. My focus is on ambition, hard work and making the most of the team’s potential. I am delighted to become head coach of this team and to be on the bench at the magnificent Parc des Princes, a stadium that embodies a passion for football.”

Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, Chairman & CEO of Paris Saint-Germain : “We are delighted to welcome Christophe to the Paris Saint-Germain family. Christophe’s track record is outstanding, and he has enjoyed success at every club he has managed.

“His many achievements are founded on an exceptional character that gets the best out of his players and his teams – based on a collective spirit. We are proud to have a French coach and look forward to the next chapter of the Club’s growth with Christophe.”
