The World Cup champion Lionel Messi could be on his way to Major League Soccer, according to Inter Miami coach Phil Neville, who has refused to rule it out.
As Sportsmail reported on November 27 last year, Miami and Messi appeared to be close to a deal.
However, the Argentine hero is now believed to prefer to extend his time in Paris after shining at the World Cup in Qatar.
At the conclusion of the European club season, his current contract with Paris Saint-Germain, a French powerhouse, ends.
It’s complicated with any deal involving a DP (Designated Player) of that calibre. It requires time.
Neville and Miami’s captain Gregore spoke to the media, and neither of them tried to play down their admiration for Messi.
“Why not? ” I think it’s possible,” he said. “Players all across the world think the MLS is a fantastic league.
I would be pleased if Messi showed there because I enjoy playing with the top players and learning from them.
Messi, 35, would have to accept a pay reduction to join the David Beckham-owned team. He currently makes about $1.45 million per week in France.
The transfer would represent a big opportunity for Messi to further establish his brand, and he would still expect to be the highest-paid soccer player in America.
Gonzalo Higuain’s retirement at the end of the 2022 season left Miami in need of a new striker heading into the 2023 season.
Josef Martinez, a forward for Atlanta United, appears to be close to a transfer after Neville praised the 29-year-old.
