Niclas Fullkrug and Julian Brandt dealt a significant blow to Newcastle’s Champions League aspirations as Borussia Dortmund secured a 2-0 victory in Group F. The result marked their second win over Eddie Howe’s injury-riddled squad, following a 1-0 victory at St James’ Park two weeks ago. In front of an 81,365-strong crowd at Signal Iduna Park, Fullkrug found the net in the first half, while Brandt sealed the deal with an 11th-minute strike towards the end of the game.
Newcastle had a chance to alter the course of the match when Joelinton missed a point-blank header at 1-0, during a spirited fightback by the Premier League side. They now have four points from four games, which is three points behind Dortmund.
Despite their previous 4-0 defeat to arch-rivals Bayern Munich, Edin Terzic’s team demonstrated determination and resilience on this night. They appeared to be deserving winners, much to the delight of their devoted fans, known as the famous Yellow Wall.
