Lionel Messi won the prestigious Ballon d’Or award for men’s football, surpassing Erling Haaland from Norway.
The 36-year-old has won the prize for his outstanding performance last season, taking over from Karim Benzema. He inspired Argentina’s World Cup victory.
The 2023 Ballon d’Or and Ballon d’Or Feminin were handed out during a star-studded event in Paris on October 30.
Messi, a favorite to win his eighth Ballon d’Or, received the men’s prize, while World cup winner, Aitana Bonmati from Spain was honored with the women’s award.
This historic win for Messi came while he was officially a player for PSG, making him the first MLS player to achieve this feat when he joined Inter Miami in the summer of 2022.
