Girona secured a 2-1 victory against Rayo Vallecano, maintaining its unexpected lead in La Liga on Saturday.Despite Rayo taking an early lead with Alvaro Garcia’s goal in the sixth minute, Ukrainian striker Artem Dovbyk equalized just before halftime, marking his team-high seventh goal of the season assisted by Viktor Tsyhankov.
In the 65th minute, Brazilian winger Savio propelled the visitors ahead by capitalizing on a Dovbyk shot blocked by goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski. With 11 wins in 13 rounds, Girona now enjoys a five-point lead over Real Madrid.
Remarkably, Girona, which competed in the second division just two seasons ago, is partially controlled by Manchester City’s Abu Dhabi ownership. Despite having one of the league’s lowest payrolls at just 51 million euros ($54 million), the club continues to defy expectations in La Liga.
