Vinicius charged La Liga with doing nothing about racist spectators at games.
On Tuesday, La Liga announced that it has reported allegations of racist abuse against Real Madrid player Vinicius Jr. to the “appropriate judicial, administrative, and sports agencies.”
La Liga also claimed that it will increase efforts to track down future instances of similar abuse.
At the Jose Zorrilla stadium in Valladolid, Vinicius walked past spectators after being replaced during Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Real Valladolid on December 30. It appeared that he was receiving abuse.
Vinicius accused La Liga of doing nothing about racist fans at games after images on social media showed supporters cursing and hurling items at him.
In order for it to take part in the case, La Liga has also requested that the Valladolid Magistrates’ Courts move the complaint to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Hate Crimes.
The league promised to step up efforts to “eradicate any sort of violence, bigotry, or xenophobia inside and outside stadiums” in the statement.
In order to maximize detection and identification of this type of behavior, which has no place in sport, La Liga announced it will expand the number of integrity police present at games where there is a possibility of racial taunts.
Furthermore, announcements will be made over the public address system and on advertising hoardings surrounding stadiums where there is thought to be a risk of potential racist behavior in the stands.
