Marcelo Gallardo, the recently appointed head coach of Al Ittihad, brings a distinguished record from his successful eight-year tenure at River Plate, where he secured 14 trophies, including three Copa Libertadores titles.
Acknowledging his managerial achievements, River Plate honored Gallardo with a 30-foot statue depicting him lifting a trophy.
Notably, the statue has garnered attention for its unique characteristics, including a noticeable bulge beneath the figure’s waistline.
Previously linked with a managerial role at Tottenham, Gallardo remained out of work since departing River in 2022. His commitment to Al Ittihad is solidified by a new contract extending until June 2025, with an option for an additional 18 months, making him one of the highest-paid coaches, earning between £17.5 million and £22 million annually.
Leading an illustrious squad featuring talents like Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, and Fabinho, Gallardo aims to propel Al Ittihad, currently occupying fifth place in the Saudi Pro League with 24 points from seven victories, towards further success. The team trails league leaders Al Hilal by 11 points.
